Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf Photography Second Part (Stone Poles/Oracular Cult/Masta Sanctuary/....)

Here's the second part of the Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf photography focused on his journeys in Western Nepal (first part : http://tribalsculpturesfromnepal.skynetblogs.be/archive/2...).....

The first pictures on this publication are focused on the stone poles that we can find in a big part of the region...some of these looks very similar to the wooden anthropomorphic poles you can see in this other publication : http://tribalsculpturesfromnepal.skynetblogs.be/archive/2...

Next i will show you some Haimendorf pictures focused on an oracular cult ceremony in the jumla region and some pictures of different Masta and Bahan sanctuaries visited by the austrian ethnologist (he didn't know the function of these temples when he has visited it).......

Bronze Sculptures From The J. & W. Meyer Collection and From The Ethnoflorence Collection

Now i would like to present you some nice examples of bronze sculptures from the Karnali region.......

......." In the statuary of the Karnali there are many bronze pieces, mostly small, between 10 and 20 cm high. Their use is mainly domestic, though some are votive statues, offered at the shrine. Many such pieces come from the lowland districts of Jajarkot and Kalikot. It is at this altitude that one would have found the metal mines, mainly copper, though they were located a little further east than in the Karnali itself. These mines are now closed, since the cost of exploitation was no longer competitive. Nowadays metal comes from India, where it is industrially extracted. Like their homologues in classical art, primitive bronzes are made by investment casting (lost wax). Alloys are numerous, but copper is almost always the main component. Many different metals can be mixed with it : zinc, lead, nickel, tin, silver, even silver alloy coins. Aspect and color can therefore vary a great deal. Some pieces, mostly representations of the goddess, can be made of pure copper, wich is her metal. Representations are more diverse than for wooden statues. Bronze allows for more details. Thre are many commemorative and figurative pieces related to major events or to ordinary people. Statues of Dhami, riders, elephants and hunting scenes are all quite common. There are also numerous oil lamps and bells, decorated with figures, or whose elements are made of anthropomorphic or animal effigies.

There are many similarities between these bronzes and the ones produced by Adivasi tribes from India. The works of Elwin Verrier and some articles on the primitive statuary of the Gond of Madhya Pradesh and of the Bastar and Kond of Orissa, demonstrate it clearly. This goes to show, once again, the cultural and artistic protohistoric connections across the entire Indian sub-continent.
